Our History

After moving to Hickory in 2009, Meredith’s Mom wasn’t able to find a local store to consign her furniture and accessories.  Meredith referred her to a consignment store on Old Lenoir Road called “Ansley’s”, which they later discovered was closed. This led Meredith to start asking around town to find where Hickory’s residents went to sell home furnishings.

“Many folks told me how much they enjoyed the consignment store that had closed, and how they wished Hickory had another option. That’s when I knew Hickory needed a new furniture consignment store.” said owner, Meredith Ross.

In the heart of furniture country where quality and name-brand manufacturing has been the norm for years, there was a desperate need for a consignment option. Part of what makes The Hickory Tree unique is the caliber of quality-made furniture. We always check for manufacturer labels and ask our sellers if they know who made the furniture they bring in to consign. There is a rich appreciation for quality and craftsmanship in this area, residents have houses full of it, and shoppers know what to look for.

Our price tags have regular dated markdowns. This, and our quick turnover, is regularly doted on by shoppers. They love that the entire store is different with each visit. The styles and pieces available are diverse, and always changing depending on who is bringing furniture to sell.

We stage the furniture in our store to look just like it would in your home. Often, used furniture stores pile items in a warehouse and IF you can see them, it’s hard to imagine how they can be used. We show you a side table with a lamp on it, beside a sofa or chair. It’s amazing how fun shopping can be when the store feels like a home. Sellers love it as well, because we use lighting, accessories, and other items on consignment to make their furniture look fabulous!

The Hickory Tree has earned the trust of over 3,500 consignors, and developed a regional following. A regular customer once gave us a huge compliment saying “I’ve been in every consignment store from Blowing Rock to Charleston and yours is the BEST!”
